Central Oregon Portrait Studio: A whole year!

Happy birthday to us, happy birthday to us, happy birthday to uuuuuussss, happy birthday to us! Wow! we're actually a whole year old - or will be this month. It honestly doesn't feel like its been that long yet when I think about where we were when we first started out it seems like forever ago.

We've come a long way in a short time. We started in an industrial warehouse space shared with a screen printer to a funky new location in the Old Ironworks District. And all along the way we've been on a journey to define who we are and how we can serve not only our clients but the rest of the photographic community here in Central Oregon. Things are really starting to take shape as we host and present more workshops and provide educational and business resources to other photographers in the area.

We hope everyone in the area will join us at our official birthday party at the end of the month. On Saturday, September 24th at the Old Ironworks monthly art walk we'll be having a party! Come join in and the celebration. The fun usually starts around 5:00 and goes into the night. There's food, drinks, music and oh YES...there will most definitely be cake!

The BIG move!

Studio 3 is making a big move! We are so excited to be packing our bags and making our home on Scott street. We've all seen the red buildings in the Old Ironworks District, but did you know it was Bend's old Grange Hall??

In fact, we found out a lot about our new home. Every last Saturday of the month all of the fantastic artists, ie. our new neighbors, host their very own Art Walk! We are so excited to be a part of such a fun, energetic, artistic community. We'll be rubbing elbows with Sparrow Bakery, Weekend Trunk Show, Stuarts of Bend, Cindercone, The Ruud Gallery, and Cement Elegance. (Check out the facebook fan page, for the list of artists, musicians and events going on every last Saturday of the month)

For a few weeks we'll be knee deep in drywall dust, making a few [minor] changes to our new home. But once our doors are open you will HAVE to stop by for a peek...you will not want to miss the Studio 3 makeover. All workshops will take place, as scheduled!

Just a quick note, to save the date, our first "Last Saturday Art Walk" will be July 30th! Come by and say hello!

Don't forget to drop by the old location ( 558 SE 9th st. suite 5, behind Country Catering) this Friday and Saturday for our Studio sale...Ahh...this is all making sense now! We've all been digging deep in the storage units, and the backs of closets. We'll have some props, furniture, clothing, household items and lots, lots more! I even heard the Kennedy's had a "purge party" in their garage....you never know what fun treasures you might find!

Capturing Action with Bob Woodward – Sports Photography Techniques

It's important to know how to keep things simple and not get locked into a set style when shooting action sports. That's why people looking for "secrets" to better help them manipulate images will not enjoy this class.

Together, we will discuss what makes for a great action sports image, anticipating the action, the importance of shutter speeds (both fast and slow). Follow focus, zone of focus, panning and when fill-flash is appropriate.

Taking a hands-on approach – bring your camera and be prepared for an evening of discussion, hands-on shooting with a model, and plenty of time for questions and answers. This class is open to all levels of photographers.

Bob “Woody” Woodward is quick to point out that he's not a nationally, internationally or globally famous photographer but a journeyman who for the past 35 years has specialized in shooting self-propelled outdoor sports.

Primarily a freelancer, Bob has held editorial positions at Times-Mirror Magazines, CBS Magazines, and The New York Times Magazine Group. one of the featured photographers in Peter Skinner’s “Sports Photography-how to capture the action and emotion” book from Allworth Press. Bob has covered two summer and two winter Olympics Games, and has called Bend his home for the past 33 years.

This workshop aimed at beginners and intermediate photographers alike and will delve into the importance of light and help you distinguish good light from bad. Among the topics discussed will be common lighting patterns, light quality, natural light, and artificial light. Hello fans of Studio 3! It's been a long time...We have all been busy around here cranking out the Holiday sessions, making sure all of our fantastic clients have everything they need. From all of us to ALL of you, we hope you and your families have a safe and happy holiday season.

I have some fun news today. We hope by now you have all heard about a fabulous fundraiser going on this week, The Rubbish Renewed Eco Fashion Show! Local artists have been very busy putting together some fantastic pieces for us which will be available that night for purchase. This event will be benefiting REALMS Charter School (Rimrock Expeditionary Alternative Learning Middle School) For those of you who may have not heard of this place, ITS AMAZING! A school dear to my families heart, but none the less a great place for our middle school children to flourish.

So, lets get down to why I'm writing this post. Partially to let you all know that Thurs, December 9th, from 5-11pm at the Century Center, will definitely be the place to be, but also for those interested in winning FREE, yes FREE, tickets to this event!

Studio 3, among several other fantastic local business's have have been sponsors of this event and as our loyal fans and clients we would like to offer a few lucky winners complimentary tickets!

There are only a few simple rules to enter. You'll have to be quick. You will have 24 hours to get in your entries and we will notify the winners tomorrow morning by 11am.

See the Light!

Like most things in life photography is a journey. You start out like a newborn, knowing nothing but eager to learn. You seek out information and acceptance. I know I did. I didn’t know squat but I desperately wanted to be a photographer. There was just something about it that drew me. The ability to freeze a moment within a frame and to then tell a compelling story with that one frame just seemed amazing. Of course when I was starting out the images from my camera were rarely that compelling. My subjects seemed compelling enough. I thought the settings I chose for them were interesting enough. There was light so you could see them. What was missing?
I started looking at images of other photographers that appealed to me, that I aspired to. What set theirs apart from mine? I tried copying their compositions and settings but it just wasn’t the same. The closer I looked the more I realized it was the light. I had light but they had LIGHT! I know I’m not the sharpest lightbulb in the cookie jar so it probably took me longer than most but apparently there’s more to light in photography than simply illuminating your subject. Who knew?!?!?

So I started studying light and how it relates to portrait photography. I learned about quality of light, direction of light, and basic lighting patterns. I didn’t have a studio when I started out so I practiced with hot lights in my garage. Flash scared the stuffing out of me so I worked really hard on natural light. I became one of those folks billing themselves as a “natural light photographer”. For me that just meant I got sweaty palms any time anyone even said the word flash.

Don’t get me wrong. I love natural light and use it as my first option many times. Its just that my personal journey began as a natural light photographer as much from a preference to the look as a fear of artificial light. I have many peers who have told me they were equally as scared of natural light when they began and consequently never shot without a strobe mounted to their camera.

I shot for quite a while as a strictly “natural light” photographer and did quite well. But after a while I was ready to expand my horizons. So as I honestly appraised my work and my attitudes I realized that in order to grow as a photographer I needed to overcome my fear of flash and add that to my repertoire. Regardless of where you are in your journey or how you got here there’s nothing inherently wrong with either path. Its where you go from here that counts.

So I encourage you to join me for an evening of discussion and experimentation as we talk about light, both natural and artificial. We’ll go over the basics and play around with lights in the studio. I’ll share what I’ve learned over my journey and encourage you to share your thoughts. Hey, it’ll be fun. If nothing else we all get to play around in a studio with models and enjoy some snacks and beverages!

Spice up your photography with easy speedlight flash techniques.

Separate your work from other photographers and get more creative with your photography by using small "speedlight" flashes. Using flash doesn't need to be complicated or scary but can be a great way to broaden the "tools" you'll need to get consistently great shots regardless of the available light. This workshop will focus on basic speedlight flash technique using Nikon equipment but the concepts will transfer over to anyone looking to use these small, "off camera" flashes with an SLR camera, or even natural light photographers who simply want to see what can be accomplished with supplemental lighting. We'll cover multiple ways of positioning one or more flashes to light people using diffusers and reflectors, how to light people naturally with flash to work in conjunction with ambient light, and of course setting your camera and flash to make it all seamlessly work! Focus will also be given to techniques and tips covered come from a recent 2- day workshop with speedlight master, Joe McNally.

This workshop is geared toward the basic to intermediate photographer.
